On 14th October, POLITICO hosted the second of its ‘Outside, In’ series presented by Phillips, bringing together health care experts from the public and private sectors to examine the opportunities and solutions technology can provide to address the challenges of an aging population.
The Aging Society has become a burning topic of the 21st century in Europe. While across the developed world people are living longer, in Europe, the number of people over 65 is expected to double over the next half-century, while the number of people over 80 is expected to triple. This reality certainly pose a great challenge to health and social systems as well as to governments. As known, desperate times call for extraordinary measures and therefore the ticking situation resulted in increased demand for technologies to improve the quality of life of the elderly has created new business opportunities ‒ the Silver Economy. In this perspective, the debate revolved around the contribution of telemedicine and evaluated to what extent it can effectively reduce the need for patients to meet medical professionals face-to-face.
